George Washington Highway House Fire
At 0501 hours May 4, 2026, all Scituate stations were dispatched to George Washington Highway for a report of a house fire. Initial caller who was passing by reported that half of the house was involved.
Tanker 61 and Unit 68 responded along with Ladder 22, Engine 41, Engine 52, Rescue 1, and Rescue 2.
While companies were responding, a second 911 call was received reporting that there may be an occupant trapped. With the reports received, a RIT team and a Tanker Task Force were requested as a precaution bringing in apparatus from Johnston, Smithfield, Foster, Glocester, Burrillville, and Coventry.
Chief 50 arrived confirming a code red, fire showing from a single story wood frame ranch. Tanker 61 arrived and stretched a line to the front door, making entry for extinguishment and to conduct a primary search for victims.
After the main body of fire was knocked down and members continued the primary search, a member of Tanker 61 fell through the first floor into the basement in the fire room. A mayday was called and the member was removed from the hole by others working in the immediate area. He was removed from the house and transported to the hospital with minor injuries. He has been released and is recovering at home.
Primary and secondary searches were completed with no victims found. The home was determined to be unoccupied.
Companies remained on scene for 3.5 hours. 12 members from Chopmist Hill responded.
We would like to thank all members of the public, neighboring departments, media, and Senator Jack Reed’s Office who reached out to check in on our injured member. Also, a special thanks as always to the Special Signal Fire Association / Providence Canteen.
