Smoke & Carbon Monoxide
Alarm Inspections

Why Smoke & CO Alarms Matter

Working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms save lives. Rhode Island law requires properly installed and maintained alarms in residential properties, and regular inspection is one of the simplest ways to reduce fire and CO-related injuries and deaths.

The Chopmist Hill Volunteer Fire Department offers residential smoke and CO alarm inspections for homes within our fire district. Inspections should be requested 14 days prior to closing. The fee for inspection is $30, payable by check to Chopmist Hill Volunteer Fire Department at time of inspection.

What We Check

During an inspection, firefighters will:

  • Verify proper placement of smoke and CO alarms

  • Test alarms for function and audibility

  • Check alarm age and condition (most alarms expire after 10 years)

  • Identify missing or non-compliant alarms

  • Provide guidance on maintenance, battery replacement, and upgrades

This is an inspection and safety check — not code enforcement. Our goal is education, prevention, and keeping families safe.

Rhode Island Requirements (General Overview)

While requirements vary by structure type and year of construction, Rhode Island law generally requires:

  • Smoke alarms on every level of the home, including basements

  • Smoke alarms inside and outside sleeping areas

  • CO alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages

  • Alarms to be interconnected in newer construction or after significant renovation

If you’re unsure whether your home meets current requirements, we can help explain what applies to your situation.
